Since being nominated for the 2010 CFDA awards, Prabal Gurung's name is becoming well known. He started his fashion career in India, where he studied design and worked as an apprentice at brands like Manish Arora, Gurung traveled for a few years before finally arriving in the Big Apple. He studied at Parsons, then did a placement at Donna Karan. He went on to work in Cynthia Rowley's design team, then became Bill Blass's creative director. Five years later, in 2009, he decided to set up his own brand.
This fall has lots of new projects in store for Prabal Gurung. His first ad campaign is out, entitled 'Great Expectations', in collaboration with stylist Tiina Laakkonen and photographer Daniel Jackson. Model Julia Saner wears sheer red and black dresses that set a melancholy, romantic tone. Inspired by the recent vampire fever, the campaign will only be available online.
To coincide with the first ad, the fall 2011 collection will also be the first of his lines to be sold in the prestigious multibrand empire Barneys NY.
And there's a surprise in store too: his Resort 2012 line has nothing to do with darkness, mystery, night or blood. Structured pieces in black and white are accompanied by bright touches of color with flower prints and stripes. A dramatic reinterpretation of the classics with explosions of color and sequins.
